Common Furnace Repair Red Flags

The most telling sign that you need furnace repairs is when your furnace stops warming your home altogether, but there are less significant signs that can be a red flag. Once you start experiencing these you should call in a specialist to take a look at your system. These signs include:

  • Bad Airflow: Bad airflow throughout your home might mean you have a clogged air filter that requires changing. It can also, however, indicate a more complex duct problem.
  • Malfunctioning Thermostat: If your thermostat is giving you wrong readings you may be looking at wiring malfunctions or even issues with the thermostat itself.
  • Increased Heating Bills: A sudden increase in your monthly bills can be another sign that there is an issue with your system.

Furnace Repair FAQ’s

Why is there water under my furnace?

Water under your furnace has many potential causes.  The most common ones include problems with your: pumps, insulation, coils, pipes, drains, or pans such as clogging, damage, or malfunctions. A professional technician can provide a specific answer and you should consider contacting one if the problem is not obvious.

How long does a gas furnace last?
Gas furnaces last somewhere between 15 and 30 years on average. After 15 years furnaces tend to become less efficient and require more costly repairs. At that point, it may be more cost-effective to replace them entirely. The rule of thumb is: if the repair is over 25% of the cost of a replacement, it is better to replace.
Why is my furnace clicking?

Furnace clicking noises can come from a variety of sources, but it can be narrowed down to a few common issues. These issues include a misaligned motor, a loose or dirty inducer fan, a gas valve issue, or issues with the pilot light and wiring. Some repairs must be made by a professional by law, contact a technician to get your problem isolated and solved.

My furnace is making a squealing noise?

Your furnace can be making a squealing noise due to worn-out bearings within the motor, or friction between misaligned parts such as the blower housing and the blower motor wheel. These are the most common causes, but a technician can identify your specific problem more thoroughly.

Are furnace filters recyclable?

While parts of furnace filters may be recyclable (the polyester fibers and the cardboard frame) it is best to just dispose of them intact to avoid exposure to the dust and dirt that the filter has trapped. Reusable filters are a green alternative to keeping furnace filters out of landfills.
