As a home owner, you know that there is never a shortage of items in your home that need to be or you want to replace or upgrade. Some of these items are more for aesthetics where other are for convenience or comfort. Your HVAC system falls into the comfort category as it is responsible for maintaining the ideal internal temperature in your home. Over the years your HVAC system suffers from wear and tear, and even if you follow a strict maintenance regime, there will eventually come a time where you will need to replace a major component such as the furnace or air conditioner. But, how do you know when it’s time to replace your furnace?

HVAC Maintenance

To answer this question, we turned to the experts; Our HVAC maintenance team. They say there are several telltale signs that it is  time to replace your old furnace:

1) Age

On average, if your furnace is between 15 and 25 years old, it is time to consider a replacement in the near future. Our technicians say that you can increase the lifespan of your furnace by completing professional HVAC maintenance annually. However, even a great maintenance routine can’t keep your furnace working forever. If your system begins to suffer from smaller failures that require part replacements, it is recommended that you replace your furnace, before it gives out on you when you need it.

2) Increased Noise

It is normal for a furnace to make some noise, but if you begin to notice that the noise levels are beginning to get louder or you notice new sounds coming from your system, this is a sign that you should be looking into a furnace replacement soon. Popping, rattling, clicking or screeching are not regular HVAC system sounds and are sure indicator that there is damage inside.

3) Temperature Inconsistencies

Temperature fluctuations throughout your home can cause discomfort and can be extremely aggravating. This should also be considered as a sign  that your furnace is not functioning optimally. Once a unit reaches its 15-year mark, it may start to become less efficient and lose the power to send warm air throughout your home. An HVAC maintenance technician can evaluate your situation and suggest the best course of action.

4) Costs

If you’re wondering why your energy bills are higher than usual, your old furnace might be the cause. Our technicians say that when a furnace stops working optimally, it can cause spikes in energy consumption. Moreover, it loses its ability to distribute heat evenly, which in turn will make you consume more energy.

5) Flame

Another sign you need to replace your furnace is related to its flame. If the flame is yellow instead of blue, it can indicate there is a dangerous gas leak. Contacting an HVAC maintenance expert immediately is more than necessary! If you ever smell gas in your home, get out of your home and call for emergency assistance right away.

6) Increase in  Dust

If you have noticed an increase in the amount of dust that has been collecting in your home lately, despite your best cleaning efforts, your older furnace might be to blame! If your furnace is unable to filter the airborne particles from the warm air it is sending through your ducts, it will cause an increase in dust inside your home. This can lead to reduced air quality and increased allergic reactions. If you find your home is in this situation, contact a local HVAC maintenance professional to inspect your system.
